Tips for wearing a face mask with hearing aids.

The world is becoming more aware of the communication challenges brought about by the mandatory use of face masks, but we are also starting to see an impact of mask wearing that we would like to help minimise hearing aids falling off as a result of removing masks. Not to mention, if you wear glasses – it is also a mission when combining all three items!
Your hearing aids are precious instruments that enable you to live a more full and connected life, so we want to protect these magic little devices as much as we can, whilst also staying COVID Safe.
The challenge has presented itself because most readily available and DIY masks are attached over the ears in the very the same place that the most popular style of hearing aids these days are also worn. When removing the elastic band of the mask from behind your ear, it is only too easy to catch the hearing aid at the same time, and in seconds it can be lost.
We have done some ‘mask’ research to help you hang onto your hearing aids:

There are alternative mask styles you can purchase that fasten over the head rather than over the ears.  Some of these simply hook over your head with elastic, giving you more control as to where they sit on your head so you can keep them away from your hearing aids.

Another alternative is a mask that ties around the back of your head. Like the one pictured here, and locally made in Victoria.

Despite your best efforts, if one of your hearing aids does disappear during de-masking, is it gone forever?  Well, this may depend on the hearing aid itself, as there are many hearing aids these days that have a built-in feature to allow you to “find my hearing aid”.  If your hearing aid is coupled to an app, you may have this feature, and this will tell you the last place and time that it detected your hearing aid to give you the best chance of locating it.

If you are not sure if you have this feature, give us a call and one of our tech savvy team members at True Hearing can find this out for you and guide you through the feature.

Should your hearing aid search be in vain, and you need to replace a hearing aid, we can arrange this as a VIP order for you to ensure you can be hearing well again in no time. Replacement devices may also be subsidised for those eligible for the governments funded Hearing Services program.  Call us today to find out more or organise your speedy replacement devices.
