Initial Experience: Expect sounds to be louder than usual at your first fitting. Your brain, particularly the Auditory Processing Centers, needs time to adjust to the increased stimulation after a period of under-stimulation.
Real Ear Measurement: Your hearing aids will be programmed to your full prescription using Real Ear Measurement. However, it’s common to reduce the amplification slightly before you leave, typically by 3-7 dB. Over follow-up visits, this amplification will be gradually increased to reach the full prescription within 45 days.
Annoying Sounds: Initially, everyday sounds like flushing toilets, car engines, and crinkling paper might seem annoying. This is normal and usually improves as you adapt to the hearing aids.
Background Noise Improvement: With consistent use, you may notice better hearing in background noise. Studies have shown that new users experience improved speech recognition in noisy environments after wearing hearing aids regularly for at least 6 hours per day.
Adaptation Timeline: Most adaptation occurs within the first 30 days of wearing hearing aids. While this process can be challenging, it leads to long-term cognitive benefits and improved hearing. Hang in there, and you’ll likely experience significant improvement as you adapt to your new hearing aids.
