Adjusting to your new hearing aids

Wearing hearing aids for the first time can sometimes be unusual as your brain starts to hear sounds that have not been heard in a while as a result of having a hearing loss. While this may be different for you on your new hearing aid journey, it is absolutely normal and all your brain needs is a little bit of training and you’ll be working those hearing aids like a pro and will forget you’re even wearing them. Here are a few tips to help you at the beginning of your hearing aid journey.

Start by wearing them at home first and in less complex environments if sounds are too overwhelming in the complex situations. This will help to familiarise yourself with new sounds you’re starting to hear so that you are not so overwhelmed when there is so much happening around you. Once you have worn them at home for a little start to wear them in the noisier environments and you will notice that the sounds are not as overpowering before you trained yourself.

We always recommend to wear hearing aids for nearly the whole day so that you can be aware of what is happening around you throughout your day. However, at the beginning, it can sometimes be too much for some to wear their new hearing aids all day as the brain has not yet adjusted to the new sounds and needs more time to adapt. One way to help in this situation is start by wearing hearing aids for only a few hours a day and then giving yourself a break before putting them back on again. For example, you can wear them for 3-4 hours straight and then take them off for 1-2 hours before putting them back on again to allow the brain to adjust to the new sounds.

It is very important to maintain the health of your hearing aids very well so that they can be performing to the best of their ability from the beginning of your hearing aid journey. Cleaning them every day to prevent build-up of dirt and wax, changing your wax filters and changing the domes if they start to look out of shape. If you need assistance with these tasks, do not hesitate to call or pop in to one of our clinics and we can assist you with this.
